D.Kay aka David Kulenkampff (born 1979^{[citation needed]}, Vienna, Austria^{[citation needed]}) is a drum and bass producer.

In 2001 D.Kay came together with Rawfull to form Ill.Skillz.^{[citation needed]} Tracks from D.Kay were released on Soul:R, Bingo, Hospital and Renegade Hardware, and he has worked with Kasra, Marcus Intalex and Black Sun Empire. In 2003 the track "Barcelona" (D.Kay & Epsilon featuring Stamina MC) reached #14 in the UK Singles Chart.^[1]

Kulenkampff is a grandchild of the entertainer, Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff.^{[citation needed]}

Ark Music Factory is a musical composition and production company based in Los Angeles, California. The company was co-founded in 2010 by Patrice Wilson,^[1] who partnered with producer/composer and multi-instrumentalist Clarence Jey.

In May 2011, Jey left Ark Music Factory to focus on his own production company Music Intersection.^[2]

Ark's business centers on the recruitment/discovery of new young singers. The artists (or their parents) pay a $2,000 to $4,000 fee to Ark, and Ark then writes and produces music in collaboration with these artists, often producing music videos and promotion of the songs. The singer owns the master recording, and Ark retains publishing rights to the song and all the sales from the song.^[1]

They state that their main objectives are to bring aspiring acts to the musical fore: "We at Ark make it possible for an emerging artist to be discovered, defined and delivered, to advance in their chosen career and be successful." Ark is predominantly based in the US, although they claim that artists they have supported have had success in different regions across the globe.^[4]

Ark's Facebook page claims to be creating a community where artists from all fields can come together to build connections and interact.^[5] Their website also claims that their dedicated team has industry professionals who have worked with Miley Cyrus, the Backstreet Boys, and Ashley Tisdale.^{[non-primary source needed]} Wilson has rebuffed claims of exploitation, claiming that the company provides a relatively inexpensive entry into the pop market for artists:

"I'm getting a lot of criticism saying I'm exploiting rich kids and their parents," says Wilson, "but find me another company that would do all this at a cost this low. I don't promise anyone fame. In fact, if someone approaches me with their only goal to ‘get famous,' I tell them they're not in this for the right reasons."^[1]

The staff of Ark Music Factory includes Patrice Wilson (also known with the name Pato^[6] for his various acts) who is the founder of the company,^[7] CEO^[8] and Sri Lankan / Australian record producer, songwriter ^[9] and co-founder and producer, Clarence Jey.^[7] At Ark, Jey writes the music and Wilson writes the lyrics.^[10] Ian Hotchkiss and Chris Lowe are the video directors.^[10]

Rebecca Black's video "Friday" became Viral.

In March 2011, Ark gained notoriety through a viral video when one of their songs, Rebecca Black's "Friday" (which also includes rapping by Wilson^[1]) unexpectedly became an Internet meme—most heralding it as potentially "the worst song ever".^[11] According to the British newspaper The Independent, Black trended high on Twitter, after the release.^[12][13] The song has been viewed more than 167 million times on YouTube. As of June 28, 2011 (2011 -06-28)^[update], the video has been removed from YouTube due to copyright claims from Black's family.^[14][15]

Wilson posted two music responses about "Friday" and the controversy it created. The first was posted on March 13, 2011 entitled "Friday (Rap Remix)"[1] written and produced by Wilson and Jey, the second on April 4, 2011 entitled "Say What You Wanna Say"[2] written by Wilson and Kustom. Both songs address some of the most common grievances against the song and the way Ark runs its business. Both these postings have received negative attention as well.

[edit] One Week to Hit Big: Pop Star

Wilson and his Ark Music Factory team appeared in One Week to Hit It Big: Pop Star the ABC (American Broadcasting Company) show Good Morning America (GMA) one-week special feature.^[16] After auditions of tens of candidates, Lexi St. George was chosen for the GMA challenge of trying to make a viral star in one week. She recorded the song "Dancing to the Rhythm" written for the show and made a music video that was broadcast on the program on June 30, 2011. The song was also used for Wowwee's Paper Jamz Pro microphones promotional ads.^[17][18]

Ark Music Factory is planning another nationwide online talent search and finalists will be chosen from online submissions, the company said in a statement.^[19] The contest named "Ark Star" began on July 22, 2011 offers eligible contestants the chance to win their own custom song, music video, and artist promotion by Ark Music Factory.^[20]

Keith Grayson (born August 14, 1966), best known as DJ Kay Slay, is an American DJ. He was referred to by the New York Times as "Hip Hop's One-Man Ministry of Insults". He has sold 350,000 copies of his two official albums.^[1]

Keith Grayson was originally a prominent graffiti artist. He was featured in the 1983 hip hop documentary Style Wars. With decline of the graffiti movement in the late 1980s, Dez began dealing with narcotics and consequently ended up in jail by the early 1990s.

Kayslay released his first album, Streetsweeper Vol. 1 on 20 May 2003. In the summer of 2003, Kayslay released a single and music video of his own for a track called "Too Much For Me". It featured rapping from Baby, Nas, and Foxy Brown, and a chorus sung by then relative newcomer, Amerie. There were cameo appearances by Swizz Beatz, N.O.R.E., Raekwon, WC and Lloyd Banks.^{[citation needed]}

Although the song was not a success, its music video was aired on MTV Jams and BET. The Too Much For Me Music Video did not feature Nas (because of Nas' solo projects) or Baby; so Loon was featured instead. This replacement started a feud between Nas and Kayslay. On March 30, 2004, Kayslay's second album Streetsweeper Vol. 2 was released. Another single and video were released for "Who Gives A...Where You From" with Three 6 Mafia. Kayslay and the song were featured on the 2004 NFL Street video game.^{[citation needed]}

Dwight Grant, (born March 6, 1974), ^[1] also known as Beanie Sigel, is an American rapper^[2] from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a former member/artist of Dame Dash Music Group and Roc-A-Fella Records where he had formed a close association with rappers Jay-Z, Freeway and other former and current artists on the Roc-A-Fella roster. His stage name comes from a street in South Philadelphia, the rapper's former stomping grounds where he worked alongside Senior Durham in the projects. He has sold more than two million albums worldwide. He decided to end his career in middle 2010 when he made his last song, "I Go Off" with 50 Cent who had signed Grant to his G-Unit Records label in 2009.^[3] In early 2011 Grant appeared in Travis Barker's album Give the Drummer Some, saying that it was the end of his career. In May 31, 2011 Grant apologized to his former boss Jay-Z. But in an interview with DJ Green Lantern, he said that he had never "apologized" to Jay-Z, and that he was still making music.^[4]

[edit] State Property (2002–2003)

In 2002, Sigel and much of the Roc roster starred in a Dame Dash-produced movie entitled State Property.^[5] Its release coincided with the creation and promotion of State Property, a group of artists signed to Roc-A-Fella that hailed from Philadelphia and organized by Sigel and Freeway. Its members included Peedi Crakk, the Young Gunz Chris,Neef, Oschino and Omilio Sparks. Their first collaboration was for the movie's soundtrack, an eponymous release that featured the original "Roc the Mic" by Sigel and Freeway.^[6] They followed up with 2003's The Chain Gang Vol. 2, featuring the single "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" by the Young Gunz; the record was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group.^[7]

[edit] The B. Coming (2005)

In 2005 Sigel finished his 3rd album with the group B.O.M.N titled The Get Back", The B. Coming, and shot multiple videos, directed by Joe Briscella, before he had to serve a year long prison sentence for a 2004 weapons and drug possession arrest. During this time, Jay-Z ascended to the Presidency of Def Jam Records, causing former business partners Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke to split off and form the Dame Dash Music Group. Sigel's B. Coming was released on DDMG and Def Jam rather than Roc-A-Fella, but contained production from a slew of Roc/Jay-Z-affiliated producers including Chad West, The Neptunes, Just Blaze, Boola and Buckwild. Artists from both sides of the split were present on the record, from State Property members to Cam'ron and Jay-Z; the record spawned Sigel a hit with "Feel it in the Air," sold 131,000 copies in its first week.^[8]

Advertising his friendship with the incarcerated Beanie, Dash publicly claimed the artist was leaving the roster with him; during the sentence, State Property was thrown into turmoil, eventually choosing to remain at Roc-A-Fella—apparently against Sigel's wishes. Upon his release, Beanie called the loyalty of his group into question and stated that he was signing with Dame and Biggs courtesy of a stronger casual relationship with the pair than with Jay-Z:

Soon after, he clarified his comments, saying he simply didn't want to be involved in the conflict and electing to re-open talks with Roc-A-Fella instead of moving to DDMG.^[9]

In 2006 Sigel resigned with Roc-A-Fella Records and started to recording for his fourth studio album The Solution.^[10] On October 29, 2007 Sigel released the first single off The Solution entitled "All The Above" which featured R. Kelly it debuted on the U.S. R&B charts at #83. On May 22, 2007 Sigel released The Solution it debuted on the Billboard charts at #37.

[edit] The Classic, Mac N Brad (2009–Present)

In 2009 after finally getting out of his contracts with Roc-A-Fella Records & Def Jam Records. Beanie Sigel released his first Independent album The Broad Street Bully. In 2010 Sigel announced he was working on his fifth studio album entitled The Closure which was to be released from Universal Republic and G-Unit Records.^[11] But on May 31, 2011 Sigel cancelled the album & retired from the music industry. Two weeks later, he returned and started working on the album again, re-titling it The Classic. In 2011 Sigel signed with 50 Cent's subsidiary label G-Unit Philly and renewed his contract with G-Unit Records from 2009.^[12] On July 13, 2011 Sigel released his first single from the album entitled "B-Boy Stance".^[13] On March 30, 2012, Beanie Sigel told Statik Selektah on Shade 45 that he would be working on a collaborative album with southern veteran and long-time friend Scarface titled Mac and Brad; at the same time, Scarface tweeted the announcement via mobile.^[14] On that day, Beanie also announced that while distribution deals with E1, Orchard, and Asylum were on the table, he decided to sign a distribution deal with EMI after one of Beanie's mutual friends suggested that Chris Schwartz check out his music. Under Schwartz's guidance, Beanie will release a new mixtape followed by his studio album This Time -- though it's unsure whether Mac N Brad will be released under the label. ^[15]

Beanie Sigel first appeared in the documentary "Backstage" but his first main role was in the hood movie State Property which spawned a sequel "State Property 2". Sigel released a DVD shortly after his third solo release "The B. Coming" entitled "The B. Coming of Beanie Sigel"in the year of 2005.^[16] Sigel also auditioned for the lead role of the 2009 film "Notorious"^[17]

Beanie Sigel also appeared in the 2011 film Rhyme and Punishment a documentary about Hip-Hop artist who have served time in county jail or state/federal prison. The film features an interview with Beanie Sigel where he discusses his conviction and life in prison.

Jadakiss[link]

The new millennium also saw various Roc artists, including Sigel, engage in a conflict with artists from Ruff Ryders.^[18] Beanie was a forerunner of the beef, publicly decrying Jadakiss, the rest of the L.O.X. and DMX. While Sigel and Jadakiss both denied any violent intent, they continued to send shots back and forth until Beanie put out a freestyle over Jada's hit "Put Ya Hands Up".^[19]

Shortyo[link]

Sigel was involved in a minor feud with fellow Philly emcee Shortyo. Shortyo's Affiliated Records crew were involved in a scuffle with Sigel as well as hip-hop group Young Gunz outside of a store. At a Roc-A-Fella concert, members of Affiliated got into another scuffle with members of Roc-A-Fella. Shortyo would soon challenge Sigel to an on-air freestyle battle with $10,000 at stake. Sigel never showed up,^[20] resulting in Shortyo releasing a diss track titled "Lovely", where Shortyo dissed Sigel using the N-Word. Shortyo, who is white, gained criticism for his use of the word.^[21] The feud has seemed to die down, as Shortyo signed Omillio Sparks to his label, and Affiliated artist Cyssero has done a song with Sigel.

Conversely, Sigel cultivated a friendship with southern rapper Scarface.^[18] Having first appeared together on "This Can't Be Life" with Jay-Z from Dynasty, the two would go on to collaborate on Sigel's first two records, Scarface's The Fix, and later on Sigel's 2007 album The Solution.^[18] On April 5, 2012, in another interview (alongside Scarface) with Statik Selektah on Shade 45, regarding their upcoming collaborative album Mac N Brad, Beanie said that he'd been wanting to do this album since the release of his debut album The Truth. ^{[Scarface Collabo Album 1]}
